YMCA and The Hills beat the rain and tricky trips north to reach the second round of the RSA Irish Senior Cup yesterday.

The Hills won their 'replay' against Glendermott on the field by five wickets in a rain-reduced game, chasing 154, and although YMCA had to go through a bowl-out to get past Downpatrick, it was won comfortably, 3-0.

It completed a good weekend for the Leinster duo as The Hills claimed their first league win of the season on Saturday by seven wickets after bowling out Terenure for 93. Max Sorensen, on his seasonal debut for the Skerries side, took 4-24 and then saw The Hills home in the 20th over.

Former international team-mate Trent Johnston also made a match-winning impact in his first game of the season for YMCA as they won the D4 derby against Pembroke by 13 runs.

Johnston top-scored with 41, with seven boundaries, from No 7 in YM's total of 166 but that proved enough as the 40-year-old took four of the last five wickets as Pembroke collapsed from 130-5 to 153 all out.

Merrion increased their lead over YM at the top of Division One to five points by beating North County by 20 runs at Balrothery. Skipper Dom Joyce hit an unbeaten 93 from just 78 balls with 11 fours and two sixes in the visitors' 226-7, but 71 from Tim Affleck put County on the victory trail.

They needed 36 off the last 20 balls with five wickets in hand, but they were bowled out for the addition of just 15 runs.

Clontarf climbed into third position after stunning Railway Union with a superb chase of 223, set up by skipper Eoghan Delany's 91. He received great support from Joe Morrissey, who hit 34 from 27 balls (two fours and two sixes) in a seventh-wicket stand of 64, and they won by two wickets with five balls to spare.
