Canoeing: Watkins fails to take final spot

IRISH canoeist Barry Watkins (21) narrowly missed a place in the 1,000m final at the World Sprint Championships in Poznan, Poland, yesterday.

Leixlip native Watkins won his heat in 3:38.9 to make the semi-finals, in which he finished third, just three hundredths of a second outside of making the final.

A European junior champion at 500m in 2007, Watkins competes in the 500m today.

Jenny Egan (Salmon Leap), who became the first Irishwoman to win a medal at a World Cup event when she took silver in Hungary this season, competes in the women's K1 5,000m tomorrow.
