Breen stretches ERC lead
Waterford driver Craig Breen and his English co-driver Scott Martin stretched their lead in the European Rally Championship (ERC) by taking victory in the Sata Rallye Azores, their third win in a row in this year's series.
Their Peugeot Rally Academy 208 T16 narrowly led after the opening day, and the remaining two days were spent in a titanic duel with title rival Kajetan Kajetanowicz of Poland in his Ford Fiesta.
Each of them took turns to lead, but the Irishman was ahead at the end of each of the first two days. On the final day, he showed his true pace and opened out the gap to more than a minute at the finish, with Kajetanowicz unable to match him.
This leaves Breen with a 14-point advantage over the Pole as he bids to add the European Championship to his impressive collection of titles.
At Mondello Park, Enda O'Connor dominated the Auto Care Formula Sheane races, despite losing most of his lead when the safety car caused the field to bunch up in race two.
His nearest challenger in the opening race was Brian Hearty, but he was almost five seconds behind at the chequered flag, while David Parks was runner-up in the second race.
The Rabbitt family had mixed fortunes, with Barry winning the first Fiesta Final and then finishing second in the later race. However, Shane came fourth in the second Irish Touring Car race after running out of petrol on the last lap when leading.
