THE AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) versus World Series of Boxing (WSB) Olympic qualifiers were yesterday rescheduled until after the International Boxing Association's (AIBA) extraordinary meeting.
The move will further fuel speculation that pro boxers will be given the green light to try and qualify for Rio 2016 at the APB versus WSB tournament, which was slated to begin in Sofia on May 13 but will now be held in late June or early July at a host city to be confirmed.
AIBA president CK Wu said last week that they want pro boxers to compete at the Olympics for the first time.
It is expected that AIBA will change their rules to pave the way for the radical move at an EGM in early June.
As things stand, the only route to Rio is through the APB versus WSB clash or in the final qualifier AIBA Open Boxing (AOB) qualifier in Azerbaijan in June.
There have been reports that ex eight-weight world pro champion Manny Pacquiao has received an invitation.
"It would be my honour to represent the country in the Olympics. I would do everything for my country," said Pacquiao, who was a guest of AIBA at last year's World Championships in Qatar.
