Belfast lightweight Sean McComb has advanced to the last 16 at the World boxing championships in Doha. He fashioned a unanimous 3-0 win over Mexican Lindolfo Delgado Garza.
McComb – a bronze medallist at the European Games in Baku – recovered from a shaky second round to secure a place in round two on Friday.
McComb won the first round 10-9 on all three judges’ card but the experienced Mexican displayed flashes of his potential particularly at the end of the round when he caught the Belfast man.
Garza took up where he left off in the second though there was still surprise at the fact that the three judges gave him the round.
So with the boxers tied 19-19 each everything depended on the final round. However, McComb – who was making his debut at this level – fired the more accurate punches and did enough to sway the judges to give him the round 10-9. So on a 29-28 verdict he went through.
