European Champion Joe Ward has became the fourth Irish boxer to reach the quarter finals at the World championships in Doha.

The Moate light heavyweight – who won a bronze medal at the last World championships two years – was in cruise control for the first two rounds, Leading 20-18 on all three judges' card he knew that his place in the last eight was virtually secure and he eased up in the last round.

His Ukrainian opponent Oleksandr Khyzhiak lacked nothing in bravery and having survived Ward's ferocious barrage of body shots in the opening two rounds he fashioned a grand stand finish and caught Ward repeatedly and deservingly won the round.

But it mattered little to Ward who still achieved a unanimous 3-0 win on a 29-28 scoreline on all three judges' card.

“It was fairly though but overall it was a good performance,” said Ward. 'The first two rounds I was very in control. The last round I knew I was winning the fight and I took my foot off the gas a wee bit, but overall I'm delighted with the win.

Ward has no time to rest on his achievement. He will be in action in his medal fight tomorrow against Mikhail Dauhaliavets from Belarus. The pair clashed at the European championship this year when Ward got the decision.
