The Tipperary native needs to secure the gold medal in order to qualify for the Rio Olympics.

There was a premature end of his contest against Indian Satish Kumar who suffered a nasty cut after an accidental clash of heads in the second round.

The decision went to the scorecards and the judges split but it was Gardiner who got the nod.

He now meets Ukrainian Viktor Vychryst in the last eight contest on Tuesday.
