Irish middleweight Emmet Brennan edged out Poland's Bartosz Golebiewski on a split decision at the European Elite Championships in Ukraine yesterday to advance to within one win of qualifying for the World Championships.
However, there was disappointment for Galway lightweight Pat Mongan, who was given a public warning for dropping his head in the second round en route to dropping a unanimous verdict to Germany's Artur Bril.
Dublin-born Brennan will now meet Azeri No 2 seed Kamran Shakhsuvarly in the last 16 tomorrow. The top eight boxers in each weight qualify for the championships in Hamburg.
Sean McComb, who won last Friday, faces Russia's current world champion Vitaly Dunaystev today, while Brendan Irvine and Dean Gardiner are also in last 16 action.
