Boxing: Taylor added to Limerick bill
IRISH middleweight Andy Lee will headline against Senegal-born Mamadou Thiam at UL next month.
Both men meet in a Brian Peters promotion on Shannonside which will also feature World, European and European Union lightweight champion Katie Taylor on May 15.
The Bray woman was added to the bill yesterday and will box an amateur contest of four two-minute rounds against an opponent to be confirmed at a venue just up the road from Lee's family home in Castleconnell.
Brian Peters said: "As a nation we have been very lucky to produce some great fighters down through the years and Katie is right up there with the very best of them. It's shaping up to be an absolutely fantastic night of boxing in Limerick and I'm delighted that the professional and amateur codes will be working hand in hand again on this event."
Meantime, Paris-based Thiam is a former European champ and has challenged for a World title on two occasions. He lost out in his tilt for the WBA crown in 2000 after being stopped in the third by Felix Trinidad in Miami.
At 38, he's 13 years older than Limerick southpaw Lee. However, he'll arrive on Shannonside with a formidable reputation as a knock-out artist having dispatched 43 of his opponents by way of KO.
