IRELAND'S young guns are just one bout away from claiming at least three bronze medals in Ukraine following three wins out of five at the European Junior Championships yesterday.
Dean Walsh, nephew of Irish head coach Billy Walsh, Declan Carlin and George Boylan all advanced to the quarter-finals in Lviv City.
Wexford straw-weight Walsh came from behind to beat Stanislav Bradac of the Czech Republic 6-4 to record his second win in 24 hours.
Carlin followed that up with a 1-0 decision over Gadzhi Khangishev of Russia in the bantamweight class and middleweight Boylan hammered Sahand Tavakoli of Sweden 5-0.
However, while the above trio advanced, Christy Nevin and Stephen Myres lost out 4-1 and 4-0 to David Rizoiu of Romania and Khusevn Bavsangvrov of Russia respectively.
Kildare lightweight Dylan Carr, Joe Nevin and Robert McGreevey will all be involved in last-16 bouts today, while light-middleweight Anthony Coyle bowed out before the start of the tournament after picking up a foot injury.
