Boxing: 'Childish' Italians walk out

Ireland's international against Italy in Belfast on Sunday night was abandoned with seven bouts remaining after the Azzurri withdrew their team because they were unhappy with the judging, writes BERNARD O'NEILL.

The Italians, who lost 7-5 at the National Stadium last Friday, threw in the towel after going 4-1 down at the Donegal Celtic club when World lightweight champion Dominico Valentino was beaten 8-4 by David Oliver Joyce after a thrilling conterst.

Two of the five judges were Italian and two of the other three -- Mike Gallagher and Seamus Kelly -- are three-star AIBA judges.

Sean Canavan, a member of the IABA's central council, blasted the visitors, claiming: "I've been involved in boxing since 1951 and I've never seen such childish behaviour. It was a despicable thing to do considering how well they had been treated here.

"Davy Oliver boxed superbly and was well worth his win -- as were the other Irish lads."
