Boxing: Blaney hands Irish fine start

Navan welterweight Chris Blaney came from behind to get Ireland's AIBA World Youth campaign off to a flying start with a 10-4 verdict over Benny Muziyo of Zambia in Baku, Azerbaijan yesterday.

Blaney was trailing 3-1 in the first stanza but restored parity at 3-3 on the bell before racing into a 7-3 second-round lead.

Ryan Burnett and Michael O'Reilly will be in action today versus Erik Sokolov of Germany and Shafiq Asif of England.

Meanwhile, the IABA offices will be closed today as a mark of respect for the late Eamonn Doherty.

In other news, Carl Froch suffered the first defeat of his pro career as Mikkel Kessler snatched his WBC super-middleweight title with a thrilling unanimous decision win in Denmark.

The Nottingham man struggled early on but found his range in the fifth, flooring Kessler, only for the referee to rule it a slip. The Dane recovered as the fight descended into a brutal scrap.
