Basketball: Dingle girls celebrate on the double
POBALSCOIL Dingle completed a superb double yesterday after their U-19 'B' Girls overcame Kingdom rivals Presentation Tralee 41-29 to become the champions of Ireland.
Dingle had already secured the U-16 'B' Girls league title earlier in the day thanks to a 20-point win over Gort CS, and an excellent display from 'MVP' Deirdre Ni Gheibheanaigh ensured the senior squad secured a famous victory.
Ni Gheibheanaigh was a consistent performer from the start, contributing five points prior to the first buzzer, but Tralee edged closer in the second quarter, reducing the arrears to three points before Pobalscoil took control.
Tralee started to fight back late in the fourth but they could not stop the speed and hustle of Ciara Ni Mhurchadha, as she rebounded consecutive baskets and converted.
An easy two-pointer by Presentation Tralee's Maria Quirke brought her side to within 10 points, 39-29, before a long open lay-up from Aisling Ni Shuilleabhain sealed the double.
Elsewhere, St Eunan's of Letterkenny emerged from an enthralling encounter with Carrigaline CS to be crowned the All-Ireland Schools League U-19 'B' Boys champions courtesy of a 63-53 win yesterday.
It took an exceptional performance from 'MVP' Aodhan Hickey to swing the pendulum in favour of the Donegal school after trailing at half-time by four points.
Meanwhile, St Louis Kiltimagh claimed the All Ireland Schools U-16 Boys title on Monday with a comprehensive 44-25 success over Patrician High School of Carrickmacross.
