Few Derby indicators were to be found on Saturday at Shelbourne, where the encouraging news was that this morning's draw (11.0) for the Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby could well feature more than the advertised 144 entries.
There has been a massive response to the world's premier greyhound event and all the big names will be in the draw, with the first round to be run over Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday nights.
Taking his place in the Classic will be the Paul Hennessy-trained Barefoot Admiral, which had the ideal warm-up when winning the Bernard Barry Bookmaker A1 final in an impressive 28.54.
This fellow has hit top form at the right time and led all the way in the final to beat Touch Of State by a couple of lengths. His early pace could see many more rivals playing catch-up. Hennessy had another good winner as Colourful Fox clocked 28.56.
Fastest over the 525 was Conor Fahy's Tyrur Irena with a blistering 28.47 run, while best over 550 was James Byrne's Coolykereen Imp as he led all the way in 29.67.
Meanwhile, Cracking Man continues to dominate the Bar One Racing Irish Sprint Cup at Dundalk and he flew around in 21.13 on Saturday when beating Gilford Driver by over four lengths.
Brian McCann's Kerrydale Lar has emerged as a real contender and he touched off Shoemakers Lad and Drumcove Lad in 21.29.
Shock of the round was the elimination of Mozzletoff behind Hi There Rocky in 21.30, while the other heat winner was Nambisco in 21.37.
