Ciara Mageean was left searching for answers after crashing out of the 1500m at the World Championships in London tonight, the Irish athlete left distraught after finishing 13th in her heat in 4:10.60. The race was won by Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia in 4:02.67.

Mageean had mixed it with the leading pack through the first two laps as Britain’s Jessica Judd took them through 800m in a swift 2:11.44. However, when the pace picked with 300 metres to run, the 25-year-old Portaferry native was left trailing and didn’t come close to securing one of the six automatic qualification spots.

“To be honest, that was just a disaster,” she said. “I felt good, the early pace was fine and I stayed out of the bother, didn’t get caught up in the early bursts, but I couldn’t get my legs to switch on.”

Mageean made no excuses afterwards, admitting that her preparation had gone smoothly in recent weeks. “Everything has been going well, but I don’t know what the story is,” she said. “I knew could make it through that round so I’ve no excuses for that.”
