Irish athletics legend Catherina McKiernan reveals her three top tips for people taking up running
Former European cross country champion Catherina McKiernan has revealed three invaluable tips for those getting started with running.
“Running can transform your life and improve the way you feel in body, mind and spirit,” says Catherina. “In the hectic bustle of everyday life, many people have trouble finding time for themselves, time to think and find peace.”
Her top tips include:
- It is essential when you decide to take up running to have a plan and to build up gradually
- Don’t go too fast too soon
- Keep a training diary
McKiernan has a simple couch to 5k training plan, as well as simple easy to follow 10k and marathon plans contained in RUNNATION, a free 24-page running guide available inside this Sunday Independent.
Derval O’Rourke has some pointers on nutrition, while RUNNATION also looks at how running benefits mental wellbeing.
The special magazine also looks at the park run phenomenon, and also features an events calendar for the remainder of the year.
Well-known figures give their favourite running routes, while Killian Byrne from Operation Transformation shares his remarkable experience in discovering the joy of running.
“My specific ‘why’ can change from day to day - but as a motivating factor it remains the strongest reason to put on the runners. It might be to balance a diet, to lose weight, to clear the mind or just to escape into your own thoughts.”
The Running Guide, in association with Sport Ireland, is published with this week’s Sunday Independent.
