Athletics: Superb Dooney retains crown

A wonderful run from the front by Kevin Dooney (CBC Monkstown) saw him secure the boys' senior title at the Aviva Leinster Schools' Cross-Country held in Santry Demesne.

The defending champion made the pace from the start, with only Ian Guiden of St Aidan's CBS attempting to stay with him. He paid the price when he was caught by Mitchell Byrne of Templeogue College and Cillian O Maonaigh of Colaiste Eoin, who finished second and third as Guiden just held on for fourth.

Another outstanding performance came from Aaron O'Hanlon (St Mary's, Drogheda) in the intermediate boys. Aaron ran away from the field with ease to claim victory from Killian Kirwan (St Fintan's) and Liam Fitzpatrick (Colaiste Eoin).

Jack Kyle (King's Hospital) had been winning through the earlier rounds, but had to give best to Glen Gaffney (CBS Mullingar) in the junior boys race.

Siofra Cleirgh Buttner of Colaiste Iosagain was the clear winner of the intermediate girls race. Siofra -- who only four days earlier had finished sixth at the European Club Championships -- pulled away for an assured victory from Sarah Fitzpatrick of Our Lady's Terenure.

In the girls senior race, Clar Nic Chartaigh of Claiste Iosagain -- who had run with Butter at the European clubs -- took her first Leinster title.

Another emerging talent, Siofra O'Flaherty (St Leo's, Carlow) took the title from Eimear Fitzpatrick (Our Lady's, Templeogue) in the minor girls.
