Athletics: O'Rourke ends season with fifth in Iaaf cup
ATHLETICS: Derval O'Rourke had to be content with fifth place and prize money of $5,000, when she wrapped up her season by representing Europe at the IAAF Intercontinental Cup in Split yesterday.
The Leevale star broke 13 seconds (12.99) but yet again Turkey's Yanit Nevin, the woman who pipped her for European gold, was ahead of her (in 12.84), though the top three places went to Australia's Sally Pearson (12.65), America's Lolo Jones (12.66) and Canada's Perdita Felicien (12.68).
At home, Andrew Ledwith (Fr Murphys AC) won the Woodie's DIY National Half Marathon in Laois in 69 minutes and 10 seconds, 41 seconds clear of Raheny's Michael Clohisey (69:51), with St Malachy's Joe McAlister third in 70:04.
Maria McCambridge (Letterkenny AC) dominated the women's race, clocking 76:15 and finishing more than five minutes clear of Raheny's Lorraine Manning (83:04), with Mayo's Catherine Conway taking third, over a minute further down, in 84:06.
