Athletics: Mills has to be a priority

There is plenty for the members of the Athletics Ireland board to talk about at their meeting tomorrow night. Like the FAI, they are standing by their man; but like the FAI, they are asking him to make some changes in his approach to the job.

Kevin Ankrom, AI's High Performance Director, has shipped a lot of criticism this year, and one of the key complaints from athletes centred on his communication, or lack of it, with them.

The loss of Joanna Mills, who is making herself available for selection to the Great Britain team, is the most high-profile example of what can go wrong when there is a breakdown in communication.

Certainly, Ankrom has been proactive in recent weeks in making contact with athletes and coaches -- which suggests he has taken on board the criticisms -- so the best thing now is for everyone to move on. And for someone to head up the M1 to tell Mills that she has a future in Irish athletics.
