Athletics: McCarthy beats late tackle
David McCarthy of Le Cheile AC was involved in a bizarre 800m dust-up yesterday that's sure to figure in the 'What Happened Next?' slot of future sporting quizzes, WRITES CLIONA FOLEY.
The former World Indoor 400m finalist was in prime position to qualify in his 800m heat after moving into the lead with 200m to go. Enter Robert Lathouwers on his left shoulder, trying to barge through on the inside.
When the Dutchman ended up inside the kerb, he skipped a corner completely by running through the in-field and then jostled McCarthy viciously when he rejoined the track, knocking the Irishman completely off his stride -- McCarthy finished fifth in 1:49.53.
Boos and whistles rang down on Lathouwers, who was immediately disqualified. A furious McCarthy had "a quick word in his ear" at the finish and was fortunate that his time got him through to tonight's second semi-final.
"I just held my ground and he ended up in the in-field. He took a little shortcut across the high jump or the pole vault or something and decided to come back in and get a bit of revenge!" McCarthy said. "Someone said he was brushing up on his Gaelic football off-the-ball skills. I need to do a bit of that myself by the look of things," he joked.
