Athletics: Hodgins triumphs in Seville Marathon

Cork'S Jill Hodgins struck a huge blow for Irish long-distance running when she won Sunday's Seville Marathon in 2:46:48, over five minutes faster than her previous best.

Daughter of 1975 BLE national marathon champion Dick, Jill had finished third in the Dungarvan 10-miler three weeks ago in a personal best of 58:26.

Huge entry for BALLYCOTTON '10'

Entries for Sunday week's Ballycotton '10' are around 300 up on last year -- over 1,500 arrived on the first day of post back in December, and 3,500 race packages have been sent out.

McGrath's five-star win in carrigaline

Sean McGrath made it five victories in as many years when winning the Tommy Ryan Memorial five-mile race in Carrigaline on Sunday.

The East Cork athlete finished in 25:56, 16 seconds ahead of George Waugh from Bandon. Polish runner Wieslaw Sosnowski -- a member of the promoting Eagle club and back in Ireland on his annual visit -- took third in 26:42.

Leevale's Carmel Parnell (56) was first woman in a time of 30:39, ahead of Helen Leonard (Rathfarnham-WSAF) in 32:02, with Mary Sweeney of St Finbarr's a further 10 seconds back.
