Ireland's Robert Heffernan today narrowly missed out on a medal in the 20km walk at the European Championships in Barcelona.

Heffernan finished fourth in a time of one hour 21 minutes exactly, just 11 seconds behind bronze medallist Joao Vieira of Portugal.

The 32-year-old from Cork, 15th in the World Championships in Berlin last year, was near the front of the chasing pack in the early stages but was eventually unable to stay with the pace set by the leading trio.

Russia's Stanislav Emelyanov took gold in 1:20.10, with Italy's Alex Schwazer 28 seconds behind in second and Vieira a further 11 seconds back in third.
