Kilkenny fitness instructor Tommy Evans of Gowran AC, led home a record entry of well over 2,000 in Saturday's annual AWARE Christmas Run over five miles in the Phoenix Park.

A former American athletics scholarship student, 32-year-old Evans raced into a commanding lead after halfway and finished in 25mins 13secs -- comfortably clear of Peter Mathews of Dundrum South Dublin AC (25:35) and Simon Ryan of Raheny Shamrock AC (25:49).

"I was feeling much better in this race than the weekend before, when I finished sixth in the Donore Harriers Jingle Bells 5k," Evans said. The Kilkenny runner, who is now coached by Eamonn Kelly, plans on running the Rotterdam Marathon next April, in what will be only his second attempt at the distance.

"I ran 2:33 in Dublin four years ago and I believe that I can run much faster in Rotterdam," he said.

Deirdre Byrne (Sli Cualann AC) continued to build on her return to competition when winning the women's race in 28:40 -- an impressive 15 seconds ahead of Annette Kealy of Raheny Shamrock AC (28:55), with Kealy's clubmate Fiona Roche back in third (29:30).
