Athletics: Cool Gillick cruises in

David Gillick was extremely calm after cruising to victory in his 400m heats yesterday in 45.84 secs and the draw for today's semi-finals has certainly done him a favour, WRITES CLIONA FOLEY.
The first semi pits top-seeded Belgian Jonathan Borlee against Gillick's Loughborough training partner Martyn Rooney and France's Leslie Djhone.
Borlee looked relaxed when winning his heat in 45.91 and Rooney looked a comfortable second behind Borlee's twin Kevin (45.71) in another.
Only one of the other medal contenders, Britain's fastest qualifier Michael Bingham (45.49), is in Gillick's semi-final.
"I got out, stayed relaxed and on the home straight I had a look, just to make sure I won it," said Gillick.
An added bonus was the progression of Irish team-mate Gordon Kennedy. Brian Gregan's fifth-place in 46.90 did not get him through, but Kennedy's 46.63, while sixth in his heat, was good enough to also make the semis as the second-last 'fastest loser'.
Newbridge's Rose Anne Galligan (22) ran a superb 800m to knock 0.63 secs off her PB. She may only have finished seventh and failed to qualify, but her 2:01.76 was the fourth fastest ever by an Irishwoman. Irish Olympians Joanne Cuddihy (400m) and Fionnuala Britton (steeplechase) are in action today, along with Thomas Chamney in the 1500m semi-finals and Ailis McSweeney, who recently smashed the Irish record, in the 100m heats.
