Athletics: Barrett's good deed reaps reward

John Barrett showed that sportsmanship is still alive and well at the fourth and final event in the Feet First/Mizuno 5km Series at Killarney last weekend.

Despite stopping to help second-place runner Arthur Fitzgerald to his feet after the latter had slipped and fallen with a kilometre to go, the 46-year-old went on to win the race in 16:33, 12 seconds in front of Fitzgerald.

Barrett, a member of the Gneeveguilla club, also took the overall award in the series, which took place in Killarney National Park.

Annette Quaid (Leevale) took first place in the women's section, her 18:13 giving her 20 seconds to spare over Maria McCarthy.
