A young college American football star will miss the remainder of his team's season after suffering burns after his girlfriend poured boiling water over him.

ESPN is reporting that Jonnu Smith, a running back for FIU and an NFL draft prospect, suffered severe burns on his head, neck, back and arm after the incident.

His girlfriend, who is five months pregnant with their child, has been charged with felony aggravated battery.

Gaspar told police that after an argument with her boyfriend, she 'boiled a pot of water, then walked over to Smith and poured it on him'.

Smith, who started for FIU for four years, ends his college career with 175 catches for 1936 yards and 17 touchdowns.
