Sponsors need to rally round and help McKenna
On Monday I was invited up to Contibret, Co Monaghan to meet rally car driver Daniel McKenna and get a spin in the car with him.
It was an incredible experience. The speeds the car reached on tiny roads is frightening, and the skill and control required to keep the car between the two ditches is impressive.
The Circuit of Ireland Rally takes place this weekend where up to 140 cars from around Europe will compete. The Circuit runs stages in Antrim and Down and is part of the European Rally championship. After my experience on Monday, I will be watching with interest.
Last September, Daniel became only the third Irishman to win the British Rally Championship and is regarded as one of the upcoming stars of the game. His goal for 2015 is to win the Junior World Rally championship.
In this sport, having the talent is only half the battle, unfortunately. The cost of running the team runs into the hundreds of thousands and sponsors are essential for the team to compete and for Daniel to reach his undoubted potential.
