Tomorrow night we're bringing the Conor McGregor show back to town. I've written here before about how compelling a character he is, so we're all looking forward to another catch-up with our fastest-rising star.

The main thing that's changed in the last few months as he recovered from the cruciate injury sustained while winning his last fight is that several other Irish MMA fighters have bounded through the gap McGregor ripped in the UFC's wall.

The sport went mainstream in America with a network deal to show fights, which means huge audiences – and several generations – are exposed to it on a regular basis. For the four or five new Irish lads on the bills, it offers a genuine chance at the big time.

As a country with a recognised star in McGregor and the bones of an eco-system in place, the probability is that we'll have a few more stars along soon.
