Wigan manager Gary Caldwell does not expect Will Grigg's Northern Ireland omission to ruin his Euro 2016 chances.

Striker Grigg was left out of Michael O'Neill's squad to face Wales and Slovenia this week and will instead be available for his club side's fixtures with Swindon and Rochdale.

That came as something of a surprise given Grigg's glut of recent goals, with a strike at Colchester earlier this month taking him to 18 for the campaign.

However, Caldwell insists he spoke to O'Neill about Grigg prior to his squad announcement and believes he may be better served helping Wigan's promotion quest.

"I spoke to Michael weeks ago and discussed it with him," Caldwell explained.

"Fortunately, he put him on standby to allow him to play in the (Wigan) games. It's great for us that we have him because he's very important to us and I'm sure he'll be part of Michael's plans for the summer.

"Michael has been to a few of our games this year so he's watching him, he knows how good he is and I'm sure he'll be part of his plans in the summer.

"Will has been excellent since just before Christmas. He's really worked hard for the team, played that role really well and if you create chances for him, he'll score goals."
