Mullins duo seek Grimes glory

Willie Mullins' pair of So Young and Midnight Game are two of the star names among nine possible runners in the Kevin McManus Bookmaker Grimes Hurdle at Tipperary on Sunday.

So Young is the highest rated horse in the reckoning for the two-mile Grade Three, having won last season's Red Mills Trial Hurdle at Gowran Park before running down the field in races at the Cheltenham and Punchestown Festivals and in France.

Four-time winner Midnight Game is the closest horse to his stable companion on official figures, but could only finish seventh on his latest appearance in the Ulster Derby at Down Royal.

The champion trainer's brother, Tom Mullins, is set to be represented in the Grimes Hurdle by admirable veteran Fosters Cross.

The 11-year-old showed he has lost none of his enthusiasm when winning on the Flat under Joseph O'Brien at Leopardstown last week.

"We were delighted with him in Leopardstown. Hopefully there will something at the Galway Festival for him, but he'll probably take in the Grimes Hurdle first," said Mullins.

"We'll have a look at the race and go from there. There will be a few options for him at Galway.

"There is an amateur riders race on the Monday, there is the Galway Hurdle, which he has been placed in before, and the Galway Plate. We'll try to pick the right option for him."

Other horses also in the mix for the Grimes Hurdle are Imperial Shabra and Steps To Freedom, although the latter has been declared to run over fences at Killarney on Wednesday.
