With just over a week to go before the UFC’s highly anticipated return to Dublin, the world’s premier MMA organisation have put the hype train in motion.
Identical to old foe Conor McGregor, Donegal’s Joseph Duffy has been bestowed with main event status by the UFC in what will just his third outing under its banner.
In a five-round lightweight showdown, Duffy will take on Dustin Poirier, a man well-known to Irish MMA fans.
The American faced McGregor at UFC 178 last September in a featherweight match-up and, after a sustained psychological warfare from the Dubliner in the lead up, was duly finished by TKO within two minutes.
In the interim, Poirier moved up to 155lbs and earned successive KO/TKO wins before being paired with Duffy.
Duffy won his UFC debut in January on the preliminary card of UFC 185 in Dallas, where he defeated Jake Lindsey with a spectacular TKO, which he followed up with an opening frame submission of Brazil’s Ivan Jorge at UFC FN 72 in Glasgow.
Duffy relocated to Montreal to train at the famed Tristar gym at the beginning of the year, where he prepares with the likes of Rory McDonald and Georges St Pierre.
Under the tutelage of Firas Zhabi and Eric O’Keefe, Duffy has thrived, watch here as he undergoes a severe sparring regime known as the shark tank.
