UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather have been fuelling rumours that a megabucks bout between the pair could become a reality.
British outlet The Sun reported on Friday that Mayweather and McGregor were going to fight against each other in a boxing match this summer.
Speaking yesterday, Mayweather himself addressed the rumours and strongly suggested that they may be valid.
He told fighthype.com: “It’s possible.
“It’s possible. It was a name that was shot at me. The rumours that you all have been hearing are the rumours that I started. It may not be a rumour. So keep your fingers crossed, it may be a boxer vs an MMA fighter”.
Mayweather's father also seemed to confirm a possible encounter between the best pound-for-pound boxer on the planet and the Dubliner.
“He had told me the other day that he’s going to take another fight,” Mayweather Sr. said about Floyd Jr. “He told me it’s (against) some kind of MMA fighter.”
Mayweather previously stated his annoyance at the media billing McGregor receives for his trash-talking exploits while the undefeated boxer sees himself as being regarded as "cocky and arrogant".
The Notorious, not one to shy away from publicity himself, recently told BT Sport that he wants the "billion-dollar fight" against Money Mayweather but that he "holds the key to the fight game".
To stoke the rumours further, Conor McGregor just sent this tweet:
