Has Conor McGregor already lined up his next career move with a switch to WWE?
Could Conor McGregor be about to swap the octagon for a ring and make a dramatic switch to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) following his shock ‘retirement’ announcement last night?
McGregor fanatics went into mourning following their hero’s Twitter message confirming his intention to retire from MMA and when it was confirmed by UFC chief Dana White that the sport’s star attraction would not be taking part in the UFC 200 event in July in Las Vegas, it appeared that the end of the Dubliner’s brief and lucrative career had arrived.
There are suggestions that McGregor’s refusal to attend a UFC press event in America has sparked an argument that may well be resolved in the coming weeks could see this retirement decision swiftly reversed, yet there are also rumours that he has already lined up an alternative career.
McGregor only follows a select band on his highly popular Twitter account, so his move to sign up for the news feeds of key WWE figures in recent weeks has fuelled the belief that he has been contacted by the hierarchy of the entertainment spectacle.
McGregor's Twitter account now follows key WWE negotiator Shane McMahon, as well as the brand’s chief officer Stephanie McMahon and WWE star Triple H, while he has also been invited to start a lucrative new chapter of his story in wrestling if he has truly left the octagon for a final time.
The rumours of McGregor's switch to WWE were fuelled by this message from Irish WWE star Becky Lynch, as she urged her compatriot to join her in the wrestling extravaganza.
Cynics believe McGregor’s retirement tweet is merely a reaction to a spat with UFC chiefs, yet his remove from the high profile UFC 200 line-up gives the impression that any dispute will be tough to resolve.
Critics of MMA would doubtless delight in the notion that the star of the sport that has exploded in interest over the last few years may be tempted to join the wrestling circus.
As every with McGregor, the social media world will await his next move with bated breath.
