According to a number of reports in the US, the FBI are investigating a gun threat that was made against UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor.

The threat was made on Twitter as a response to comments the Crumlin native made during his press conference with Nate Diaz, who has replaced the injured Rafael Dos Anjos, ahead of their bout at UFC 196 on March 5.

During the press conference, he said: “I honestly like Nick’s little brother.

“How can you not like him? He’s like a little cholo from the hood. But at the same time, he coaches kid’s jiu jitsu on a Sunday morning and goes on bike rides with the elderly. He makes gang signs with the right hand and balloon animals with the left hand.”

One fan took exception to McGregor's claims and took to Twitter to voice his objection. He sent a tweet to McGregor's Twitter account of a picture of a man carrying an AK-47.

The UFC were notified of the threat and are understood to have upped their security. The FBI are reportedly investigating the incident as well.

The Twitter account has been suspended.
