Brandon Miele registered Shamrock Rovers' 200th goal at Tallaght Stadium with a fittingly brilliant strike and the 20-year-old midfielder then capped this facile victory with the goal of the game.
Though Rovers enjoyed plenty of the ball from the start, it was bottom-of-the-table Limerick who were close to opening the scoring on 18 minutes, defender Robbie Williams scraping the bar with a header from a Sean Russell corner.
Rovers continued to dominate, though, and took the lead with a spectacular strike on 33 minutes as Miele's right-foot shot from some 30 yards found the top corner of a surprised Freddy Hall's net.
Rovers punished slack marking to double their lead eight minutes into the second half. Marty Waters whipped a free kick in from the left and Conor Kenna found the net with a crisp header.
Limerick got a goal back on 62 minutes. Barrry Murphy could only parry a low drive from Shane Tracy and Ian Turner followed up to tap home the rebound.
Rovers' two-goal lead was restored within three minutes.
Miele picked out Danny North and, after his shot was touched away by Hall, Patrick Cregg followed up score his first goal for the club.
The move of the game then brought Rovers' fourth goal on 82 minutes. Simon Madden, Miele and Gary McCabe were involved before substitute Ryan Brennan's flick found the run of Miele who rounded Hall to side-foot home his eighth goal of the season.
