Conor McGregor, Jamie Heaslip and Paul O'Donovan have all been nominated for the RTE Sportsperson of the Year award.

The 12-person list features stars from a variety of disciplines, with boxer Carl Frampton and hurler Seamus Callanan also getting the nod.

After such a spectacular year for Irish sport, there were always going to be some tough omissions, with Footballer of the Year Lee Keegan one of those unlucky to miss out.

Nor were there any representatives from Connacht's Pro12-winning team or the Irish side that made the second round at Euro 2016.

The winner will be announced on December 17 on RTE One.

Here is the full list:

Seamus Callanan (Hurling)

Eoghan Clifford (Paralympic cyclist)

Katie George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal (Paralympic cyclists)

Brian Fenton (Gaelic football)

Carl Frampton (Boxing)

Denise Gaule (Camogie)

Jamie Heaslip (Rugby)

Daryl Horgan (Football)

Conor McGregor (MMA)

Annalise Murphy (Sailing)

Paul O'Donovan (Rowing)

Brid Stack (Ladies football)
