Mark Johnston to make late call over Buratino's National Stakes run

A late decision will be made over the participation of Buratino in the Goffs Vincent O'Brien National Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.

Although the Coventry Stakes winner remained among the entries at the latest confirmation stage on Tuesday, the Mark Johnston-trained two-year-old is not certain to line up in the Group One event.

With connections keen to avoid the soft surface they feel was the reason behind his defeat in the Phoenix Stakes, plans are in place to hold off making a decision until as late as possible, much like the one that saw him swerve an outing in the Gimcrack Stakes at York last month.

Johnston's son and assistant, Charlie, said: "As I understand it he is going to travel, but no decision will be made until the 11th hour regarding his participation.

"We are watching the weather closer than the boys in the Met Office. There is rain forecast overnight Friday and if that comes he would definitely not run.

"It will just be a case of keeping a close eye on the weather as the week goes on. It will be like the decision that was made at York."
