United are preparing for their most important ever transfer window as they look to revamp the squad that missed out on European qualification for the first time since 1990. Kroos, who has helped Bayern to a Bundesliga and German Cup double, as well as the Champions League semi-finals.

However, Kroos has been linked with a move to United throughout the season after talks with Bayern over a new contract collapsed due to the 24-year-old’s wage demands.

He is preparing for this summer’s World Cup after being named in Joachim Low’s Germany squad, but the Daily Mail is reporting that a deal has already been agreed that will see Kroos head to Old Trafford as new manager Van Gaal’s first signing since being announced as the replacement for David Moyes.

The Scot was sacked in April with Van Gaal’s appointment being confirmed on Monday this week, and interim manager Ryan Giggs was named as the Dutchman’s assistant in an effort to retain a link to the ‘Class of 92’ and the club’s former success under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Kroos may not be the only Bayern player who could join United this summer with 62-year-old Van Gaal also believed to be confident that he can lure winger Arjen Robben to join him in Manchester, even though he signed a three-year contract extension earlier this season.

The 30-year-old will join Van Gaal in Brazil this summer as part of the Netherlands challenge for the World Cup, but his future beyond the tournament looks unclear with talk of a Premier League return increasing by the day.

Robben joined Bayern in 2009 for a £20m fee from Real Madrid, having enjoyed a stint with Chelsea under Jose Mourinho before in which he helped the Blues to back-to-back Premier League titles in 2004-05 and 2005-06.

It has also been claimed that United have agreed a £27m for Southampton left-back Luke Shaw, who will also be heading to Brazil after beating Ashley Cole to be included in Roy Hodgson’s England squad. Their interest remains in Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels, as United seek replacements for both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand who have both left the club following the conclusion to the Premier League season.
