Liverpool are set to play in a lucrative post-season friendly at the Aviva Stadium with Shamrock Rovers lined up as potential opponents for the English Premier League club.
The fixture is due to take place on Wednesday 14 May, just three days after the Premier League season ends and with Liverpool currently challenging Chelsea and Manchester City for the title there is a possibility of Dublin playing host to the English champions.
Liverpool officials are keen to return to Ireland following the success of last summer’s Dublin Decider against Glasgow Celtic which sold out within 30 minutes of tickets being placed on sale. Though Liverpool have also been invited to play a friendly in Mauritius at the end of the season they are hoping to be available for the proposed date at the Aviva.
The prospect of Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard appearing at the national stadium would be sure to attract a major crowd, particularly following a season in which Brendan Rodgers’ side have established themselves as the Premier League’s great entertainers.
Liverpool were prevented from playing a post-season friendly against Ajax in Johannesburg last year but the proposed fixture was cancelled following the intervention of the South Africa Premier Soccer League.
Although their latest visit to Ireland is not expected to be confirmed imminently it is understood that Liverpool are close to committing themselves to playing at the Aviva for the second time in less than a year.
