Liverpool clean sweep as Brendan Rodgers named manager of the month and Daniel Sturridge earns player award
Liverpool have landed an early season awards double with Brendan Rodgers named Premier League manager of the month for August and Daniel Sturridge the player of the month.
It is the first time in four years the Anfield club has received the accolade, recognition of a flawless start to the new Premier League campaign.
Rodgers has steered Liverpool to three consecutive league victories, perching his side at the top of the league going into this weekend’s fixtures.
Each 1-0 success was secured by goals from Sturridge - August victories over Stoke, Aston Villa and Manchester United inspired by the England striker.
The last Liverpool manager to win the trophy - sponsored by Barclays - was Rafa Benítez in March 2009.
Liverpool secured a double on that occasion too, as Steven Gerrard was player of the month as the club made their last challenge for the title.
The Merseyside club will hope it is a good omen as that was the last time they finished in the top four, earning Champions League football.
The award demonstrates the growing belief Liverpool will be a more formidable opponent this season, Rodgers’ blueprint taking shape a year after his appointment.
