Wayne Rooney has achieved a lot in his twelve years as a professional footballer.

In spells at Everton and then Manchester United, the Liverpudlian has won the Champions League, the Premier League, captained his nation and become the top goalscorer in England's history.

But in that time few people have struggled so visibly to master the basic workings of the social media platform, Twitter.

While Rooney's talents on the field will be honoured at his Old Trafford testimonial tonight, we would prefer to take the opportunity to hail Rooney's skill for posting entertainingly weird tweets.

His first tweet was arguably his best...

Often, he got in Twitter arguments with himself...

He once tried, and failed, to kick-off his own film review page...

He used social media to upset Liverpool fans...

But he hasn't quite got the hang of hashtags...

He announced his new hair with this touching tweet...

And then went a little too far with the detail...

He's prone to Ricky Martin-esque outbursts...

He loves 'getting on the mic'...

He prefers Alicia Dixon to Piers Morgan on Britain's Got Talent...

He once cursed Tom Cleverley with this optimistic tweet...

He still doesn't use Twitter to its full potential...
