Watch: Referee misses wonder strike and to goalscorer's horror just waves play on
Poor Joe Noblet; if he's scored a better goal in his career, this writer would like to see it.
Alas, Noblet's weekend wonder strike won't go down in the annals, as the referee bafflingly waved play on rather than indicate a restart.
If you watch carefully - or carelessly, too, for that matter - this 'goal cam' video shows just how clearly Noblet and Squires Gate scored their goal against Ashton Athletic. View from 1:20 below:
The two sides were contesting a vital end-of-season match in the North West Counties League Premier Division, the English football pyramid's ninth tier, with Squires Gate needing a win to avoid relegation.
Thankfully this staggering 71st-minute decision did not prove costly, with Squires Gate already one goal to the good, eventually rounding out a 2-0 win.
In the video, Noblet nails a pearler of a shot from 40 or 50 yards out, sailing over Ashton goalkeeper into the top corner - but it bounces back sharply off the stanchion back onto the pitch.
Despite the wild celebrations of several Squires Gate players on one sideline, the referee appeared to be fooled by the bounce and the immaculate poker-faces of the Ashton defenders.
One defender hares back and clears the loose ball, while the goalkeeper - whose shoulders visibly sag when the ball hits the net - quickly regains his poise and trots back into position.
