Bastian Schweinsteiger had his manager and the press corps in stitches when he mocked the thick Scouse accent of Wayne Rooney.

The Manchester United captain revealed earlier this week that he fancied himself as a bit of poet and the German World Cup winner was asked whether or not the skipper is ever inclined to recite verses in the dressing room.

The midfielder said he was unwilling to break any football omerta, but went on to admit that his Bavarian ears are still unfamiliar with the Scouse dialect.

His remarks drew a big belly laugh from the usually stoic Louis van Gaal, as well as all the journalists who had gathered for United’s pre-match press conference ahead of tonight’s  Champions League clash with Wolfsburg at Old Trafford.
