‘The ultimate kick in the bo******’ – One Scottish paper took yesterday’s results very badly indeed

While it was a glorious night for Irish football supporters, it was an entirely different mood for our Celtic neighbours Scotland after their Euro 2016 hopes were ended with Ireland’s incredible victory.

Shane Long’s winning goal ensured not only a guaranteed play-off spot for Martin O’Neill’s side, it means that an automatic spot is still up for grabs after defeating the world champions at the Aviva Stadium.

The unexpected result ended Scottish hopes of a play-off, knowing they had to better Ireland’s result when they hosted Poland. A 2-2 was irrelevant after the night’s events in Dublin and the Daily Record was obviously struggling to come to terms with how the results transpired.

The headline was nothing but raw emotion.
