Universally regarded as one of the finest athletes in the world of sport, Cristiano Ronaldo’s ego too has reached almost mythical proportions. Take his reported approach to interviews.
The Real Madrid superstar famously had mirrors installed at the Manchester United training ground soon after his arrival and takes great pride over his public appearance.
In The Sunday Times today, Jonathan Norcroft has lifted the lid on Rafa Benitez’s ill-fated time as manager at the Bernabeu and references the lengths the Portuguese star will go in order to maintain his high personal grooming standards.
“Ronaldo rubs ice on the face to make it glow before leaving the dressing room for interviews,” writes Jonathan Norcroft, who adds the player generates more than €66m in shirt sales for the club.
The article also claims that Perez wanted to sack Benitez after the 10-2 drubbing of Rayo Vallecano, the club’s biggest league victory in 56 years , because he substituted four-goal Gareth Bale with 15 minutes remaining in the contest.
Perez was talked out of the decision by club directors, before he was promptly sacked two games later.
