Fenerbahce and Netherlands striker Robin van Persie has come under fire for his behaviour in a Turkish Cup tie this weekend, getting one opponent sent off before picking a fight with a former teammate.

A generous application of amateur dramatics from van Persie was enough to see Besiktas defender Dusko Tosic dismissed despite minimal contact having been made in the tackle - prompting Tosic's wife to call out the Dutchman in an abusive tweet.

Jelena Karleuša, a popular singer in the couple's native Serbia, later removed the tweet at the request of her husband. It read: "R. van Persie is one stupid motherf*****. Brake (sic) a leg a******!"

She later clarified: "Dusko asked me to remove my tweet about Persie, and I did.

"What can I say, I don't like dirty players. Kisses to all Besiktas fans!"

To exacerbate the tensions, van Persie then netted the winning goal for Fener to secure them passage to the last eight of the competition.

Not happy with that, the 33-year-old began a fresh scrap by celebrating his goal provocatively in front of Besiktas' Oğuzhan Özyakup - a former teammate of van Persie's at Arsenal.

Özyakup was far from amused: "I have a lot to say about the incidents on the field, but I won’t say them," he said after the game.

"Just one thing. I was very good friends with a certain player on the field. That changed today.

"Sometimes you see the real face of a footballer on the field."

The former Manchester United star has had a turbulent time in Fenerbahce, having fallen our with previous manager amid a row over his amount of game time upon signing for the club.

Van Persie has 29 goals in 66 appearances in all competitions for Fener, having moved in the summer of 2015.

Pop star Karleuša was evidently getting plenty of grief for her outburst from Fener supporters, but refused to give any ground: "Note to Fenerbahçe fans," she tweeted. "I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of me not giving a f***."
