Oklahoma's Trevor Knight has responded to Katy Perry, four months after the singer made a joke on-air, asking him to call her.

The Sonners quarterback tweeted the star on Monday, saying " I know I'm a little late but we would be one heck of a power couple!" adding the hashtag #SuperbowlBae, but was later forced to deny that he had, in fact, called her.

In the wake of Perry's superbowl success the tweet hit the headlines and many sports reporters seemed to find the furore ridiculous.

Last October, when Perry made the comments, ESPN's Jake Trotter tweeted a 'quote' from the sports star.

The Norman Transcript's John Shinn wryly tweeted "One issue is he doesn't have her number".

Following the popstar's invitation, Knights girlfriend made her media appearance, with TMZ telling Katy to "find another college football player to crush on"..."because Trevor Knight already has a smoke show girlfriend".

Perry is reported to be back with ex-boyfriend John Mayer, so it looks like Knight missed his chance.

Katy made the comment during an appearance on ESPN's 'College GameDay' in October, and Knight tweeted his joke following her Superbowl performance.
