A bronze statue of legendary Irish athlete Sonia O'Sullivan was unveiled in her home town of Cobh over the weekend and is causing a stir.

There has been a lot of comments on social media over the past 24 hours after images of the sculpture emerged and it has been garnering some mixed reaction.

The statue by James McLoughlin was the brainchild of Cobh Tourism and unveiled to mark the 20th anniversary of Sonia's gold medal-winning performance at the 1995 Gothenburg World Championships.

Sonia was present at the unveiling and is believed to have given her blessing to the creation.
