Ireland soccer legend Paul McGrath has collected a windfall for charity - after kind-hearted Manchester United legend Gary Neville chipped in with a big bid for one of his signed shirts.
United great McGrath was auctioning off one of his jerseys for the Brainwave charity, with interest in the shirt taking off once Neville threw his considerable influence into the bidding.
With Mulligan’s Irish bar in Manchester apparently set to land the prized jersey when they bid €700 as the auction edged towards a conclusion, but that is before Neville got involved with his own generous offer.
Neville offered €1000 on the condition that McGrath’s old United team-mate Norman Whiteside would add his name to the shirt, while adding that he wanted the red jersey to be hung in Mulligan’s bar and not his own home.
Mulligan’s responded by offering to match Neville’s offer so long as he signed the jersey as well, with McGrath’s charity securing a bumper €2000 windfall as a result.
There are not too many feel good stories like this around in these troubled times so well done to McGrath, Neville and Mulligan’s bar for lifting all our spirits.
Amazing lads thank you so much https://t.co/SHhYmYiD5P— Paul McGrath (@Paulmcgrath5) July 31, 2016
