Move over 'the dog ate my homework'. We have a new all time classic when it comes to making excuses.

A Laois hurler has trumped possibly every excuse there has ever been for missing training - he couldn't get upstairs to get his training gear because his father varnished the hall floor!

Twitter handle @LsHurlingDev tweeted a screengrab of a text message from the unlucky player to his manager reading: "Paul, Dad varnished the hall floor and I can't get up the stairs to my training stuff..now even lying! Gonna miss training, have to sit in the kitchen all night while the floor dries."

Extra laps for this lad at his next session.
